Toyota, Suzuki to produce electric vehicles for India market by 2020

Toyota, Suzuki conclude Memorandum of Understanding for introduction of EVs in India

Though government of India has envisaged the deadline of year 2030 to go for all electric vehicles (EV), it the year 2020 which is going to the landmark when numerous automobile manufacturers operating in India will begin rolling out their pure electric models in the country, albeit in smaller numbers.

Toyota and Suzuki intend by 2020 to start selling electric cars in the Indian market, to this end, the parties signed a Memorandum of understanding.

According to the joint statement, Suzuki will be tasked under the MoU to produce EVs for the Indian market and will supply some to Toyota, while Toyota is to provide technical support. Both brands have also planned to conduct a survey for the widespread acceptance and use of EVs in India.

As India counts high on electric vehicles, the global scene seems to be much more agile and committed in taking the pace. The study includes concerns about setting up charging stations and human resource for after-sales service of EVs.

The automobile majors observed that under "the leadership of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi", India is endeavouring to rapidly promote an automotive transition to EVs.

In a bid to shift to electric vehicles in India, Suzuki has already announced that it will set up a lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant in Gujarat. In addition, electric motors and other major components will be locally procured for the production of EVs in India.

On the other hand luxury vehicle makers including Audi, Mercedes, BMW, JLR are already working on bringing the EV in the Indian market by the 2020. The other key factor for the success of EVs in India is the pricing. The company will also introduce a pair of compact crossovers, the C-HR and IZOA, from the middle of next year, a key segment of the world's biggest auto market where Toyota now offers no models.

The MoU aims to work together to solve the grave issue of pollution ensuring smooth introduction of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles in the State.
