Trump asked Xi to resolve Ball arrest

Trump asked Xi to resolve Ball arrest

Arriving the day after the players were arrested, Trump reportedly raised the players' predicament during his visit to Beijing.

Ball, a freshman guard, and forwards Cody Riley and Jalen Hill, both of whom are also freshmen, were arrested after being accused of stealing sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton store near the hotel in which they were staying.

Ball, who is the brother of Los Angeles Lakers rising star rookie point guard Lonzo Ball and the son of the outspoken Big Baller Brand founder LaVar Ball, now remains in China with his two teammates. The White House said Xi assured Trump that he would "ensure the three players are treated fairly" and that the case moves toward a resolution.

A USA official speaking to Nakamura on the condition of anonymity said that the case is proceeding towards a resolution with reduced charges in the matter. The athletes were unable to play in the game, and they remain in China awaiting their fate while the rest of their team returned to the USA days ago.

Surveillance video of the players appeared to show them shoplifting from stores inside of the high-end shopping complex including Salvatore Ferragamo, Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent.

The three were allowed to make bail but were not allowed to leave Chinese territory when the rest of their team flew back to the United States.

Donald Trump is trying to do what the UCLA men's basketball team couldn't do: take its Ball and go home.

Ball, the second son of outspoken and high-profile sports dad, LaVar Ball, is set to begin his freshman season at UCLA.
