United Kingdom industrial output jumps in September

Industrial output and manufacturing output in the United Kingdom both rose by 0.7% in September - the fastest growth for each sector since December past year.

The UK's industrial production was surprisingly strong in September, pushed up by another bounce in the UK's manufacturing industry.

The pound was marginally up against the dollar, 0.1% higher at $1.3167, following the positive output figures.

Manufacturing rose 0.7 percent in September, the fifth consecutive increase and more double market forecasts.

The ONS also reported that the UK's trade in goods deficit was £11.25bn in the month, better than the £12.8bn analysts had pencilled in, with exports rising faster than imports.

However, he added that the recovery in manufacturing output could be hit by recent rises in the oil price.

The reports round off a quarter which saw economic growth pick up slightly to 0.4 percent, a level which remains below its pre-Brexit referendum average as political uncertainty and inflation crimp consumer spending.

Despite this, the UK's trade performance during the third quarter as a whole worsened, according to the ONS data.

A widening in the trade deficit in the third quarter, to 9.5 billion pounds from 6.5 billion pounds in the previous three months, means net trade once again dragged on growth during the period.

The ONS said the latest economic data did not suggest there would be any change to its initial estimate that the United Kingdom economy grew 0.4% in the third quarter of the year.

"It was a different story altogether for the building sector, with construction output down 1.6% in September". As well as the sharp fall in September from August, output was only up 1.1 per cent from a year earlier.
