United States air traffic controller charged with possessing pipe bomb

An air traffic controller at a North Carolina airport was arrested after he was found to be in possession of a homemade explosive device, police said. He was charged with acquiring, possessing and transporting a weapon of mass destruction, police said late Friday.

The FBI said it's assisting authorities in Charlotte but doesn't anticipate bringing federal charges against either suspect, WCNC reported. He was charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction and related charges. Paul Dandan, an air traffic controller at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, was one of two men arrested Friday in connection with an explosive device discovered in their home last week, according to law enforcement.

Both men were arrested Friday, but it's unclear how they knew each other.

Dandan's roommate has also been arrested for having bomb-making materials, the Charlotte Observer. He admitted to detectives that he made the bomb in order to use it against a neighbor. Fells changed his mind about using the weapon, and gave it to Dandan, according to police, who began investigating the case November 3.

Dandan was sacked from his job as an air traffic controller at the airport as a result.

Fells was charged with three counts of manufacturing a weapon of mass destruction and one count of possession of a weapon of mass destruction, police said.

It can also be in the form of a poisonous chemical, a weapon involving a disease organism, or one that is created to release deadly radiation.
