USA cult leader Manson dies in prison at 83

He was hospitalized in January for gastrointestinal bleeding, according to news reports and returned to the hospital in mid-November where he passed away on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 8:13 p.m. He first sent three of his followers to retrieve money from Gary Hinman, but when he failed to turn over the cash, the Family members kept him hostage for two days before eventually stabbing him to death.

He had been taken to hospital last week in a serious condition, according to U.S. media.

Manson's followers committed a series of nine murders at four locations in July and August of 1969, including the killing of actress Sharon Tate and her unborn child.

The Manson clan also stabbed to death grocery magnate Leno La Bianca and his wife Rosemary La Bianca the night after the Tate murders. Another member, Charles "Tex" Watson, was convicted later.

Charles Manson wasn't there when the murders took place, but was convicted and given the death sentence.

Manson got the death penalty in 1971, but when that was ruled was changed to 9 consecutive life sentences.

Vincent Bugliosi, the chief prosecutor of Manson and his acolytes, Manson described him as "an evil, sophisticated con man with twisted and warped moral values".

Michele Hanisee, president of the state Association of Deputy District Attorneys, said on Twitter that Manson would not be mourned.

Cranston's cousin, who was about a year-and-a-half older than he, would have been about the same age as Dianne Lake, Manson's youngest devotee, when she joined his "family" at the age of 14 in 1967.

"I said a prayer for his passing", said Debra Tate, sister of Sharon Tate. Manson was found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder for the deaths of seven people served nine life terms.

He became a self-styled guru and borrowed bits from different religions, but taught his followers that they were the reincarnation of the early Christians and he was none other than the second coming of Jesus.

Manson had been denied parole 12 times, most recently in 2012.

The last parole hearing Manson attended was March 27, 1997.
