Valencia MotoGP: Marquez tops warm-up for title decider

Marc Marquez will race as usual.

Spain's Marc Marquez sealed his sixth world championship and fourth in the premier MotoGP category with third place at the season-ending Valencia Grand Prix today.

The moment - which dropped him to fifth before the Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo crashed in front of him - was the result of pressure from Tech3's Johann Zarco, as he was "scared" to let the Frenchman try a potentially risky move.

Dovizioso, an Italian rider for Ducati, has won six races this season despite not starting from pole position once.

Honda's Marquez held a commanding 21-point lead in the championship from Ducati rival Andrea Dovizioso, and was guaranteed the title with a top-11 finish or if Dovizioso failed to win the race.

One man demonstrating less regard for the title ramifications was Lorenzo, who proved to be one of the biggest obstacles to Dovizioso. His only hope of tipping Marquez for the title was to win and see Marquez finish 12th or worse.

With his bike leaning perilously close to the surface, Marquez poked his left elbow out and appeared to use it to stave off disaster.

"I told myself 'I won't let go even if the bike flips, if I have to get hurt then this is the time to do so"'. He also has two titles in the lower classes.

"I am happy that I achieved my goal of being in front, because the start is very important on this track", Marquez said on Saturday.

Marquez's title bid was almost derailed six laps from the end when he ran into the first corner too quickly and lost the front under braking, though he miraculously save the incident and safely navigated his way out of the gravel trap.

"Johann was very strong all the race and it was very hard because he was going into the corner very fast".

Pedrosa, another Honda rider, overtook Johann Zarco late in the race.

Marquez's younger brother, Alex Marquez, took pole in Moto2 ahead of champion Franco Morbidelli.

In Moto3, pole-sitter Jorge Martin won the race ahead of champion Joan Mir.
