Veterans Day NFL Boycott by Fans Sends Clear Message to Players, Owners

New Jersey Bar Boycotts NFL For Veterans Day

The NFL policy indicates that players "should" stand during the anthem, but has no mandatory requirements.

The Facebook page "Boycott the NFL" has asked all its followers to celebrate Veterans Day weekend by refusing to watch NFL games "in solidarity with veterans around the country", given that players are still engaging in national anthem protests and NFL policy remains the same, The Washington Times reports.

Earlier in the football season, the American Legion, the nation's largest veterans' organization, called the athletes who failed to show respect for the national anthem as "misguided and ungrateful".

Viewership for NFL football games is down 5 percent from past year.

In New Jersey, a bar in Farmingdale called Woody's Roadside Tavern plans to hold a fundraiser for veterans and their families, instead of showing National Football League games on the bar's 20 television screens, NJ.com reported. No other protests immediately emerged.

Members of the Houston Texans stand and kneel before the game against the Seattle Seahawks at CenturyLink Field on October 29, 2017 in Seattle, Washington.

The NFL Players Association had pleaded with players to observe a two-minute moment of silence before games to honor veterans.

The afternoon games offered a different story, as players who have protested before continued to demonstrate during the national anthem.

The protests broadened across the league in September, after President Donald Trump told an Alabama crowd that any player protesting during the anthem should be removed from the field. It, however, doesn't make a requirement for them to stand, the Times reported. "We have a very close relationship with Special Forces Chapter 19 and we just kind of felt like it was a good fit for us to kind of take a stand for them".

But the Lower Burrell American Legion is following suit with the VFW and for the first time will not broadcast the National Football League games on Sunday.

The Los Angeles Rams saw linebacker Robert Quinn put his right fist in the air during the national anthem. Punter Johnny Hekker again put his arm around Quinn in support.as he has done for several games.
