NASA sent Nespoli and the crew pizza ingredients in November as part of a cargo-delivery mission to the International Space Station, helped by aerospace company Orbital ATK, which launched the rocket that carried the supplies.

Included on the craft were prepackaged crusts, a squeeze bottle full of pizza sauce, spreadable cheese and toppings including olives and pepperoni. The video footage of the crew the pizzas from floating in weightlessness ingredients gained in popularity.

He said: "When you really, really miss pizza..."

"Thank you Kirk for surprising us with unexpectedly delicious pizzas".

Then, they compared them to a similar group of samples gathered from homes here on Earth-cutting boards, toilet seats, pillowcase, door trim-as well as from bacterial samples taken from human bodies, to see whether the space station's microbes more closely match a home or a body. No need to worry about putting the pizza down in between bites - it just floats there.

Once heated, they throw the pizzas to each other like frisbees before eating them. Today he has safely returned to Earth. The crew, he said in a tweet, "had a blast channeling our inner chef by building tasty pizzas for movie night". For that study, people around the U.S. were asked to send in samples of the bacteria found in their homes, and they were then sent up to the International Space Station - the new research reverses that, bringing samples back down from space and exploring them.
