Atlanta mayor's race comes down to close call

In 2009, Norwood barely lost the mayoral race to Mayor Kasim Reed.

New Atlanta Mayor-Elect Keisha Lance-Bottoms dropped by Real Talk with Rashad Richey just hours after she claimed victory in the Atlanta mayor's race.

Lance Bottoms was at the CBS46 studios to talk with us about her huge victory.

Norwood cited an unofficial count in her address to supporters, and said while she was behind in votes, she was waiting for further updates on the vote total later in the week.

Democratic Party of Georgia chief Dubose Porter told the crowd Bottoms was "beyond being the most qualified person in the race".

The runoff between Bottoms, who is black, and Norwood, who is white, was seen as a test of the staying power of the city's long-dominant black political leadership amid profound demographic and economic changes.

Norwood has requested a recount in the latest contest because of the close margin.

"We're behind the times in terms of having a modern transportation system compared to what you see in NY or Washington", said Kendra A. King Momon, professor of politics at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. "This is very close".

Norwood is placing some hope on winning provisional ballots, but election officials in DeKalb and Fulton counties say there are 540 provisional ballots yet to be counted. "We knew that every single vote would matter".

Tuesday's runoff was triggered by the November 7 general election, in which Norwood finished second with 22 percent of the vote to Bottoms' 27 percent.
