British board to review Fury licence

Boxer Tyson Fury at the Manchester Arena

The former world heavyweight titleholder was given a back-dated two-year ban by UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) on Tuesday.

Tyson Fury will need to prove his physical and mental wellbeing before regaining his licence to fight after the British Boxing Board of Control confirmed on Wednesday that they will review his suspension next month.

The 29 year-old has always had volatile dealings with Smith and the Board since breaking onto the British scene back in 2010, whilst a recent UK Anti-Doping hearing strained their relationship further.

In confirming that Fury's case will be discussed in January, a BBBoC statement on Wednesday read: 'The British Boxing Board of Control acknowledges United Kingdom Anti-Doping's decision in relation to Tyson and Hughie Fury.

Fury, whose last fight was two years ago when he beat Wladimir Klitschko to claim the WBA, IBF and WBO belts, blamed the failed test on eating uncastrated wild boar.

"I'm a fighting man through and through and I've never backed down from anyone in my life and I was certainly not going to back down from fighting this dispute", said the Manchester fighter, who hails from the traveller community.

Fury's license was revoked by the BBBofC in October 2016 and his cousin Hughie Fury, 23, was also cleared after he too tested positive in 2015.

"Hughie and I have maintained our innocence from day one and we're now happy that it has finally been settled with UKAD and that we can move forward knowing that we'll not be labelled drug cheats", added Tyson Fury.

"I can now put the nightmare of the last two years behind me". Fury also had a social media message for Joshua, tweeting on Tuesday: "Where you at boy? I'm coming for you punk", he said.

But a loophole to box with an Irish licence was shut down earlier this year when Mel Christle, the Boxing Union of Ireland president, told Sky Sports: "The protocol is that the BBBofC is, like the BUI, affiliated to the [European Boxing Union] and the World Boxing Council".

Licence suspended The Furys were not charged by UKAD until June 2016, by which time Tyson Fury had beaten Klitschko.

A separate charge against Tyson Fury for refusing to take a drug test in September 2016 was withdrawn by UKAD.

"Who knows, I might not even go back to the British Boxing Board of Control after how they have conducted themselves and the manner in which they behaved around the whole thing", Fury said in the video, which has since been deleted.

Fury's win against Christian Hammer, from February 2015, has been officially overturned to a "no contest" as part of the UKAD settlement.
