Conte accepts title 'impossible' for Chelsea after West Ham loss

West Ham vs Chelsea

"With four defeats in 16 games, we must have another target".

Chelsea hopes of retaining the Premier League title suffered a severe blow as West Ham United upset the form book to win the London derby 1-0 on Saturday and give David Moyes his first win as their manager. We have to change. It's normal when you play every three days. For sure, you have to pay something for this.

"When you lose against Crystal Palace at the bottom of the table and now to lose again, against West Ham - that at this moment is in a bad position in the table - if you lose points in these games it means you are not in the title race", Conte said. When you have this task, it is impossible to think that you are in the title race.

That target, he told the BBC, is now to ensure there is Champions League football next season.

But Conte insisted he would tell the board what he thought but emphasised that transfers were out of his hands.

He said: "I can't describe my feelings, it was fantastic". I think it is come back and the confidence is going to be high now.

'But, I repeat, the last decision (on transfers) is the club's.

Captain Gary Cahill admitted that Chelsea's defeat by their London neighbours was poor.

West Ham chose to sit back and defend after their early lead and Cahill was displeased Chelsea failed to break them down.

"We tried to get back into the game but that laboured start carried on throughout the game. But we played well, we scored a good goal in the first half and if we'd been better with the ball in the second half we'd have got another goal". We were just not at the races - for whatever reason that is. "It was very disappointing".
