Crime rate up in Telangana, spurt in rape and cheating cases

City tops in crimes against sr citizens, 2nd against women

Crimes against women have only marginally decreased between 2014 and 2016, dropping by 0.14%.

Crime rate is defined as crime cases per 1 lakh of population.

The state also held the second position in the country in cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSOA), with 4,815 cases registered followed by MP with 4,717 cases in 2016.

It may be noted that of these three states, the BJP was not in power in Uttar Pradesh during the time when these cases were reported as the state had a Samajwadi Party government, led by Akhilesh Yadav in 2016. State capital, Hyderabad, is the second most risky metropolitan city for married women after Delhi. However, in terms of crime rate, Mumbai comes way down the order at rank 15. The state registered a marginal hike in total crimes.

Delhi, the national capital, tops the chart with highest crime rate (974.9) under IPC crimes followed by (state) Kerala (727.6) against national average of 233.6.

In 2016, the Mumbai Police had registered 6,096 crimes that are classified as violent crimes.

A total of 32 people also died or disappeared in the country past year while they were under the remand of the police.

As of a year ago, there are 94,919 people in Maharashtra declared as missing, again the highest number in the country. Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh reported the highest incidence of rape with 4,882 cases (12.5%) and 4,816 (12.4%), respectively, followed by Maharashtra with 4,189 cases (10.7%) during 2016. Additionally, there were 7,956 cases of kidnapping in the state past year, behind only Delhi.

Madhya Pradesh, which has the fifth highest population in the country, has again earned the dubious distinction of having the highest number of rape cases registered among all States a year ago. Of the 40,801 cases of atrocities against scheduled caste community members, 10,426 were reported from Uttar Pradesh accounting for 25.6 per cent followed by Bihar with 14 per cent (5,701) and Rajasthan with 12.6 per cent (5,134) during 2016.

Rape cases shot up in 2016 by 12.4% as opposed to a 5.6% decline between 2014 and 2015, which experts said was on account of under-reporting. A total of 2.23 lakh criminal offences were registered with the railway police previous year, up from 1.96 lakh in 2015.
