Facebook fires back at former exec who says it's 'ripping apart' society

Palihapitiya went even further, revealing that he prohibits his own children from using the social network.

"I think in the back deep deep recesses of our minds we kind of knew something bad could happen, but I think the way we defined it was not like this", Palihapitiya said.

The 41-year-old added: 'The short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops we've created are destroying how society works. "That is truly where we are", he said.

Palihapitiya went on to add, "If you feed the beast, that beast will destroy you". "If push back on it, you have a chance to control it and reign it in". He suggested that people take a "hard break" from social networking.

As the discussion grows regarding foreign actors potentially influencing the outcome of the USA elections in the USA using Facebook posts and ads, and the weaponization of the Internet for propaganda around the world, there is growing concern that social media is starting to change how the world works, but not for the better. "No civil discourse, no cooperation; misinformation, mistruth". He doesn't allow his kids to use the platform, and encourages other people to stay away from it, too.

"I don't have a good solution", Palihaptitya admitted.

"My solution is I just don't use these tools anymore", Palihapitiya said. "I haven't for years".

Galaxy S9 Will Fight iPhone X Face ID with This
The iris camera lens will be improved to 3 megapixels from 2 megapixels of Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 to capture clearer images. Finally, The Korea Herald's report notes that some consumers are still concerned about the integrity of biometrics.

Palihapitiya joins other former Facebookers who are voicing concern about the impact the social network is having.

A Facebook spokesperson has responded to recent critical comments from former executive Chamath Palihapitiya, saying Facebook "was a very different company" during the period he worked there. Still, if Facebook was going to respond to such damning criticisms, people might wonder why it didn't issue a more cogent response.

Founder/CEO of Social Capital, Chamath Palihapitiya, speaks onstage during the Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts on October 19, 2016 in San Francisco, California.

Earlier it was Sean Parker who had told that that social media creates "a social-validation feedback loop" by giving people "a little dopamine hit every once in a while, because someone liked or commented on a photo or a post or whatever". Instagram is evaluating a stop-motion tool for its stories feature and a standalone messaging service spun out of Instagram called Direct. He claimed that its creators purposely made Facebook addictive, as it exploits vulnerabilities in the human psychology. The approach does not work for tackling problems such as diabetes, delivering of precision medication to treat cancer, or educating significant portions of the world's population.

At an event at the Stanford Graduate School of Business last month he made these astonishing claims against Facebook saying that he and his associates who worked there at the time were acutely aware of the beast that they were creating.

The entire talk is embedded below and is worth a watch.

He is not the only former senior Facebook executive, to have slammed the network.
