Federal Bureau of Investigation ordered 4000+ guns seized from buyers who failed background checks

The FBI issued more than 4,000 orders a year ago to reclaim guns from buyers who should have been blocked by the federal background check system from buying firearms. The National Instant Criminal Background Check System is used only by gun sellers with a federal license--buyers fill out a form from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in the gun shop, revealing information about criminal history and other personal details.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions last month demanded a full review of the federal background check system following the mass shooting incident that took place inside a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, The Hill reported. Legally, all federal agencies and military branches have to report certain crimes-like Kelley's conviction for domestic violence-to the federal background check system.

The FBI's national instant criminal background check system processed a record 27.5 million background checks past year.

USA Today noted that the number of successful seizures past year is unclear and that the number of guns that should not have been purchased may be higher because more than one firearm may be bought in one dealing.

Analysts must complete background checks for potential gun buyers within three days of the proposed purchase.

David Chipman, a former ATF official, said agents tasked with taking back guns from owners are exposed to possibly risky situations. It was not immediately clear how numerous guns were successfully recovered. "You don't want ATF to stand for 'after the fact".
