Google adds more browsing security to your Android device

Google Assistant Gets Further Optimisations for Indian Users

The Google Safe Browsing Team has announced that it will be pushing a new updated policy that requires all app developers to inform users of what data is being collected, and how they intend to use that data. If a developer includes surreptitious data harvesting in an Android app, Safe Browsing will be able to detect it and warn the user.

Applications that handle personal device and user data, like phone numbers or emails, will be required to prompt users and display their own privacy policy.

More importantly, this policy will extend to apps that have not been downloaded from the Google Play Store. The regulations will come into place in the next "60 days" - let's say, February 1- and a Safe Browsing/ Google Play Protect warning will be shown on all pages leading to the non-compliant apps.

Safe browsing will also be used to warn users about websites that lead to apps that collect personal information without first seeking a user's consent. Further, if the apps save information that is not necessary they are needed to explain users how the data is going to be used.

Google notes that two common violations are when an app doesn't treat a user's installed apps as personal or sensitive user data and when an app doesn't treat the user's phone or contact book as personal data. "For example, during analytics and crash reportings, the list of installed packages unrelated to the app may not be transmitted from the device without prominent disclosure and affirmative consent". This will apply at all times; for instance, the list of installed apps on your device can not be sent from your device during a crash report without consent.

Google's Safe Browsing team is tamping down on "unwanted and harmful" mobile activity on Android, Google said on Friday.

The OS maker is giving app developers 60 days to fix their issues and update apps with notifications of their full practices.
