Google Doodle Celebrates Homai Vyarawalla's 104th Birth Anniversary

Internet search engine giant Google honours the first female photo-journalist of India, Homai Vyarawalla, with a sketch doodle consisting of black-and-white and sepia line drawings.

Born in a Parsi family on 9 December, 1913 in Navsari, Gujarat, Vyarawalla and her family moved to Mumbai as she wanted to pursue a diploma course in St. Xavier's College. She later moved to Bombay, now Mumbai, and studied at Bombay University and Sir J J School of Art. They later shifted to Delhi.

Her career took off after her marriage to Manekshaw Vyarawalla, who worked as an accountant and a photographer for Times of India.

Most of her photographs were published under the pseudonym "Dalda 13". Her work was published under the pseudonym "Dalda 13", symbolizing her birth year, her car's registration number (DLD 13) and her age when she met her husband. She was awarded with Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award of the country in 2011.

First active in the late 1930s, she retired in the early 1970s. Vyarawalla spent her childhood moving from place to place with her father's travelling theatre company.

Vyarawalla has also photographed Queen Elizabeth and former US President Dwight Eisenhower's visits to India. The departure of Lord Viceroy, Lord Mountbatten and the funerals of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Lal Bahadur Shashtri. She clicked some memorable photographs between 1938 and 1970. In the year 1989, she lost her son and only child.

Later on, she handed her collection of photographs to the Delhi-based Alkazi Foundation for the Arts.

Homai Vyarawalla passed away on January 15, 2012. Such was her contribution, Google paid tribute to her on Saturday with a Doodle.
