"House of cards" to resume production next year without Kevin Spacey

Claire Underwood is stepping into the spotlight for House of Cards sixth and final season

The popular Netflix drama "House of Cards" will continue production on its sixth season without Kevin Spacey, amid allegations of sexual misconduct by the actor, according to media reports. And while there were rumors about a possible spin-off featuring none other than Robin Wright, it now looks like she'll be leading the final episodes of the Netflix hit - without Spacey. In light of Spacey's sexual harassment scandal, his character on the series will likely suffer an off-screen death, and the storyline will be altered to focus on Robin Wright's Claire Underwood.

Said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer for Netflix, "We are excited to bring closure to fans".

It remains to be seen if the series will debut in its previously-scheduled release window of 2018.

"We have made an arrangement to produce six seasons of "House of Cards".

Claire Underwood has moved center stage since "House of Cards" premiered in 2013, going from the wife of Spacey's congressman to first lady and then vice president.

Spacey reportedly will not appear in any of the episodes, even though the final season was two weeks into shooting.

Actor Anthony Rapp was the first person to make allegations against Spacey.

The company has jacked up its production budget to meet the lofty goals it has set for itself, projecting it will spend between $7 billion and $8 billion, up from $6 billion this year. It was unclear whether filming would ever resume on the Emmy-winning series. But in fact, he said, it's "one of our most efficient shows" in terms of the number of people who have viewed the show and its ability to attract new subscribers, relative to its price tag.
