Man shot by police at Amsterdam airport after threatening crowds with knife

"Air traffic is experiencing no further consequences".

A soldier near the spot where a man with a knife was shot by police before being taken into custody at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam.

The Schiphol Plaza was evacuated following the incident.

"The man threatened with a knife and the military police shot him", spokesman Stan Verberkt said, according to Sky News.

Police have shot a man threatening crowds with a knife at Amsterdam Airport this afternoon.

Roos van der Ven says Schiphol Plaza, which houses stores, bars and restaurants, was evacuated, but not the parts of the airport behind the check-in area and security checks.

But the airport tweeted later that the plaza was "reopened to the public again. A small part is still closed down", it said.

Trains were temporarily not stopping, but are now going in and out of the airport station as normal.

The man would have smashed a window; the situation is safe now and the motive of the man is unknown yet, reported Dutch television NOS.

A hospital gurney with someone on it is then seen being wheeled along outside the airport, surrounded by emergency workers.

Schiphol is one of Europe's busiest airports and Friday is one of its busiest days of the week.

It serves as the second main hub for Air France-KLM, and also hosts many budget airlines such as Transavia and EasyJet.

Europe is still on high alert after a wave of terror attacks across the continent over the past year.
