Max hospital row: Two doctors who declared premature baby dead terminated

Delhi hospital terminates services of two doctors after a baby declared dead was found to be alive

Max Healthcare said in a statement released late Sunday evening that the decision to let the two doctors go should not be interpreted as an admission of guilt. "We ripped it open, found bits of plastic and the baby [boy] inside, breathing".

The doctors declared the twin sister stillborn, and the twins' grandfather, Praveen Malik, told CNN that they initially said the baby boy was in critical condition before pronouncing his death a few hours later.

The family observed slight movement in the polythene bag while they were on their way to perform the last rites.

The boy, who has been given the name Champ, is on life support at a Delhi nursing home.

A team led by the DCP, additional DCPs and three ACPs from the northwest district has prepared a two-page questionnaire for the medical staff. DCP (northwest) Aslam Khan said that the questioning would continue on Tuesday.

The incident sparked outrage and a debate over the quality of private healthcare which is often costly. India's health minister, JP Nadda, called the incident "heartbreaking".

"We are shaken and concerned at this rare incident". "Sought a report on shocking criminal negligence by Max Hospital, Shalimar Bagh and directed Dept to conduct a inquiry into this unacceptable act", tweeted health minister Satyendar Jain. Cops are also probing Ashish's allegation that the hospital had asked them to pay Rs 50 lakh for keeping the baby in its nursery. Separate inquiries by the hospital and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) are ongoing.

New Delhi police are continuing to review hospital records as well as video footage from the twins' birth to better understand how the doctor's arrived at the conclusion. "The difference between a mistake and negligence is deliberate action. I don't think any doctor will do it wilfully", he said.

He added that on November 22, the state government had issued a notice to the hospital regarding treatment under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category where they were showing ignorance.
