Modi praises Sunni Board's stance on Ram Mandir hearing issue

Sibal Swamy

The Supreme Court on Tuesday deferred the final hearing in the long-pending Ayodhya-Ram Janambhoomi case till February 8, 2018 after a specially constituted bench sat a day before the 25th anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition, reports said.

Reacting swiftly to BJP president Amit Shah's allegations on the Congress's stand on Ram temple in Ayodhya, Randeep Surjewala and Pawan Khera, the national spokespersons of the Congress, said that the Congress stand on the Ram temple was similar to the BJP's - the readiness to accept the verdict of the Supreme Court. "The prime minister should decide if he is giving any direction to the Supreme Court", Sharma said.

The Waqf Board said it wanted speedy justice in the case and was not in favour of deferment.

There are reports that the board has said it did not agree with Sibal's views.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the Sunni Waqf Board, had said in the Supreme Court yesterday that the appeals in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case be heard in July 2019 after the completion of the next Lok Sabha polls as the atmosphere at present was not conducive for the proceedings.

Modi, who was back on the campaign trail in poll-bound Gujarat on Wednesday, added that he would not remain silent on the triple talaq as the issue is for the right of women.

He also pitched for simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies.

Rehmani also said that Sibal had talked about shifting of the hearing on the advice of the AIMPLB and other Muslim parties. He has the right to do it and we do not have any problem with it.

"Why does he have to link a Ram mandir (temple) with the elections".

"But you dare say that the case should not be heard till 2019 elections". I request the PM to be a little more careful before making such public comments. Are these thoughts of delaying the hearing for elections that of the Waqf Board? "Whenever the Congress wants to take a different stand on an issue, it keeps Kapil Sibalji in the forefront". Modi asked from the crowd. Slamming Congress, he further said, "If a road to solution is coming let it come. All should work towards a peaceful solution. but they (Congress party) are trying to create hurdles".
