Oxford dictionaries reveals its word of the year

Oxford Dictionaries have published their annual survey of new terms... and the victor has us fondly remembering the 80s.

Oxford Dictionaries is recognizing the power of the millennial generation with its 2017 word of the year: youthquake.

The word was chosen for its ability to define 2017, having seen a 400 per cent increase in usage between 2016 and 2017 and reflecting "the increased awareness of young people's capacity to influence, and even drive, political change".

However, the publisher said thanks to the "so-called political awakening of the oft-maligned millennial generation", it chose to use it.

Diana Vreeland, editor-in-chief of Vogue, first coined the term in 1965 to describe the post-war turmoil and the baby-boomers' rejection of traditional values.

Have you heard of a youthquake?

But are fare hikes worth paying for new rail tunnels?
Department of Transportation left the group overseeing the Gateway Program, the Gateway Development Corporation. The surcharge is needed to pay for the cost of rail tunnels .

Oxford Dictionaries said the word sounded a note of hope after what it described as a "difficult and divisive year".

Now, the word of the year is supposed to be a term that has attracted a "great deal of interest during the year to date".

Also on the shortlist for the award was "broflake" - a man who is offended by attitudes that conflict his world view - "newsjacking", which is taking advantage of developing events to promote a brand and "unicorn", meaning something that is dyed in rainbow colours, decorated with glitter and so on.

Last year's word, "post-truth", was chosen after the 2016 Brexit vote and Donald Trump's victory in the USA presidential election.

"Words like antifa and kompromat speak to fractured times of mistrust and frustration".

While talking on the BBC's Today program, Oxford Dictionaries consultant Susie Dent couldn't actually provide an example of how the term would crop up in everyday speech. "It feels like the right note on which to end a hard and divisive year".
