Patriots' Gronkowski gets one-game suspension for late hit

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski talks with back judge Dino Paganelli late in Sunday’s game vs. Buffalo

In the fourth quarter of the Patriots' 23-3 win over the Buffalo Bills Sunday, a chippy game went over the top on a play in which Bills cornerback Tre'Davious White intercepted a ball intended for Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.

As for what's ahead, the Patriots travel to South Florida to face the Miami Dolphins on ESPN's Monday Night Football in Week 14, before a highly anticipated December 17 road game against the Steelers.

ESPN's Adam Schefter said Gronkowski will appeal the suspension.

Zolak thought that White was holding on the play and that somehow excused Gronkowski's retaliation. But NFL vice president of football operations Jon Runyan did not accept Gronkowski's defense. "The Competition Committee has clearly expressed its goal of 'eliminating flagrant hits that have no place in our game.' Those hits involve the play you were involved in yesterday".

White was placed into the concussion protocol following the shot he took from Gronkowski.

"First of all, I want to apologize to No. 27", Gronkowski told reporters.

To earn his maximum salary for 2017, Gronkowski would need to record 25 catches or 351 receiving yards over the final three weeks of the regular season - an average of 8.3 catches or 117 yards per game. He's on his way to a fourth 1,000-yard season, with 849 through 11 contests.

Gronkowski opened his press conference by apologizing for his action, noting that he can't let frustration get the best of his emotions.

"I kind of felt like he pushed me a little bit and made the play, and I just don't understand why there wasn't a flag", Gronkowski said of the play. Hyde and Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola were both called for unnecessary roughness for a separate altercation, and Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct for his behavior toward officials. It was unclear what McDermott said to Belichick to elicit that response from the Patriots coach.

Gronkowski has been suspended for one game after delivering a leaping forearm to the back of Bills cornerback Tre'Davious White's head after White was down on the ground following an interception in Sunday's game. "It was a lot of frustration and I was just really frustrated at that moment".
