Sen. Al Franken makes announcement about his future

"It's become clear that I can not both pursue the ethics committee process and remain an effective member". There's more I want to say, but the first and most important thing-and if it's the only thing you care to hear, that's fine - is: "I'm sorry", Franken said in the email statement. "I think that was the right thing to do". His apologies toward numerous accusers, he said, might have given the "false impression" that he was admitting wrongdoing. Over the last few weeks a number of women have come forward to talk about how my actions have affected them. Kirsten Gillibrand, the first to call Wednesday for Franken to resign.

"Enough is enough", fed-up New York Sen.

The woman, who was not identified, told Politico that she ducked to avoid his lips but Franken told her: "It's my right as an entertainer". The victor of a special election in November 2018 would serve through the end of Franken's term in January 2021.

Lt. Gov. Tina Smith is near the top of any list, having served as Dayton's second-in-command for three years.

"I am announcing that in the coming weeks I will be resigning as a member of the United States Senate", said Franken, adding that an internal Senate investigation would make him unable to properly serve his constituents.

The resignation demands came in rapid succession even though Franken on Wednesday vehemently denied the new accusation that came from a former Democratic congressional aide, who said he tried to forcibly kiss her after a taping of his radio show in 2006.

The first allegation against Franken - for which he has apologized - was made by sports broadcaster and former model Leeann Tweeden, who said he forcibly kissed her, and touched her without consent as she slept, during a 2006 tour entertaining USA troops deployed in Afghanistan.

As political analysts - including CBS News Political Director Steve Chaggaris have pointed out - puts a spotlight on Republicans, as they determine what to do about Roy Moore, the GOP candidate for U.S. Senate in Alabama who is accused of pursuing teenage girls when he was in his 30s.

Amid the humbling moment, Franken nonetheless struck resolute cords, striking back at some of the accusations. Franken responded with a public apology and a Senate Ethics Committee inquiry into his behavior.

The film will be directed by Kevin Connolly , best known as talent manager Eric Murphy in the " Entourage " franchise. However, the film's star John Travolta , isn't happy that the news makes it sound like the film was cut.

The calls for Franken's resignation came on the same day that two more women came forward with accusations against him.

Fellow Democratic Minnesota Sen.

Franken said "I am proud that during my time in the Senate I have used my power to be a champion for women".

Franken's career began in show business, when he and his creative partner Tom Davis parlayed their frequently political style of satire into gigs on the writing staff of the inaugural season of Saturday Night Live in 1975. He gained national notoriety from SNL, which made him one of the best-known members of Congress.

Pawlenty ran for president in 2012. Kirsten Gillibrand of NY.

Among his books was "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right". The book, which received a five-star rating from its Amazon readers, was reviewed by the Washington Post with comments like "genuinely amusing book, often hilarious. The Senate, and the country, would be the poorer without him".

It's pretty clear that Franken is resigning only under duress. After ousting Republican Sen. Paul Wellstone died in an airplane crash days before the election. He narrowly lost to Franken in 2008 in a close election that included a monthslong vote count.

His 2014 re-election bid was easier as he got more than 53 percent of the vote against Republican MIke McFadden.
