Subway bomb suspect appears in court from hospital

Bombing underscores NYC subway system’s vulnerability

U.S. prosecutors on Tuesday brought federal charges against the suspect in Monday's attempted suicide bombing in one of New York City's busiest commuter hubs, accusing him of supporting a foreign terrorist organization.

The suspect, identified as Akayed Ullah, a 27-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant, had asked his wife in Bangladesh to read the writings and listen to the sermons of Moulana Jasimuddin Rahmani, the now imprisoned leader of a banned group called Ansarullah Bangla Team, said Monirul Islam, a top official of the counterterrorism department.

Ullah planned to "murder as many human beings as he could ... in support of a vicious terrorist cause", acting US attorney Joon Kim told a news conference after filing the charges.

Three people were injured after the attacker's pipe bomb partially exploded in a subway passage near Times Square on December 11. In an interview with investigators, Ullah admitted he built the device in addition to detonating it, court papers show. According to the document, Ullah made statements indicating he "was inspired by ISIS to carry out" the attack. NY officials on Tuesday also filed state charges against Ullah, as investigators in his home country questioned his wife.

The wife of the suspect in a pipe bomb explosion in NY was "surprised to find out what her husband did", police in Bangladesh told CNN, despite speaking to him 30 minutes before the attempted attack.

The federal charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Ullah remains hospitalized due to serious burns from the pipe bomb that was strapped to his chest when it partially detonated. Ullah's passport, which was recovered from his home, had handwritten notes, including one that read, "O AMERICA, DIE IN YOUR RAGE".

Items such as wire, screws consistent with the ones found in the device and fragments of Christmas tree lights were found in his apartment, the complaint says.

Investigators in Bangladesh said Ullah's wife had said he'd asked her to listen to the sermons of Moulana Jasimuddin Rahmani, the now imprisoned leader of a group that has been linked to killings and attacks on secular academics and bloggers. He chose a workday to target as many people as possible.

Parker requested a court-appointed defender for Ullah. They said the couple have a six-month-old baby boy.

Ullah's family released a statement through the Council on American-Islamic Relations saying they are heartbroken by the attack, but simultaneously "outraged" by the behavior of unspecified law enforcement officials during the investigation. NY police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were leading the investigation into Ullah in conjunction with other agencies through the Joint Terrorism Task Force, and were asking the public for any information about the suspect. Assistant FBI director in charge William Sweeney said, there is so far no indication that Ullah attracted attention of FBI before.

As of Monday afternoon, Ullah had not been formally charged, but he will likely be prosecuted in federal court, authorities said.

Within hours of the blast, President Donald Trump was assailing the immigration system that had allowed the alleged bomber - and multitudes of law-abiding Bangladeshis - to enter the U.S.

Crowley recently prosecuted another ISIS-inspired attack on New York City, winning the conviction in October of Ahmad Rahimi for a series of minor explosions that rattled Manhattan and New Jersey in 2016.

Trump has called on Congress to end the diversity immigration lottery, which provides visas to people randomly chosen from countries where there is a low rate of immigration to the United States. So if they can not come here, it's going to be very sad.

In a sign of the increasing numbers of Bangladeshi immigrants coming to the USA, they are no longer eligible for the diversity visa lottery, which is open to countries that have seen low immigration to the United States.
