Teens don't always know what they're vaping, study says

Researchers have conducted Monitoring the Future surveys among U.S. high school students in their final year since 1975, adding lower grades in the 1990s.

"While binge drinking among eighth, 10th, and 12th grade students remains well below the levels seen a decade ago, the downward trend in binge drinking appears to have slowed somewhat in recent years", said George F Koob, PhD, director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

As the opioid epidemic sweeps away scores of American adults, abuse of those drugs has hit a historic low among teens, who are increasingly drawn to marijuana and vaping.

According to the study, 5.8 percent of eighth graders, 9.4 percent of 10th graders, and 13.3 percent of 12th graders reported using illicit drugs this year.

"I think if we did not have all these changes in policy and norms, we would have seen a decrease in marijuana use just like we would have seen in other drugs", Volkow said. "As we are getting smarter and more conservative with our opioid prescriptions, we are hopefully limiting access through diversion".

The survey also found that cigarette smoking amongst teens has plummeted.

She noted another study finding: 1 in 17 high school seniors said they use marijuana every day.

Nearly a third of those who had vaped said they had inhaled contained nicotine, while 11.1% said marijuana or hash oil. He added that these figures may underestimate the number of students who vaped nicotine, since the drug may have been present in other vaping liquids without teens realizing it. The rise of nicotine vaping has caused concerns amongst health advocates.

Both Miech and Volkow said increased marijuana use was something to be on the lookout for.

WPI inflation up 0.7 pct in November 2017
The central bank's increased concern about inflation has prompted it to hold rates since a trim in August. The MPC also said that that inflation expectations, i.e., food and fuel inflation, edged up in November.

This year's report, released this morning, found that use of almost all types of drugs had fallen among the 43,703 teens surveyed, including opioids and "synthetic marijuana", or "K2", which is killing adults across the country.

In fact, more high school seniors now use marijuana on a daily basis than smoke cigarettes.

"One of our 2016 data points puts vaping products at the second highest use after only alcohol for our IN high school students", Silverman says.

Likewise, binge drinking has leveled off with more than 16 percent of 12th graders in the USA reporting. "A lot of youth are interpreting that legalization as a sign that states are sanctioning it; that it's OK".

Use of snus - a moist, powdered form of smokeless tobacco - fell for all three grades combined, with 2.6 percent of surveyed students saying they had used it in the past year.

About 1 in 3 middle and high school students surveyed in 2017 said they had used some kind of illicit drug sometime in their life. IN marks it slightly higher at 17.5 percent. This year, that percentage dropped to 64.7%.

Accordingly, use among teens increased in 2017, the first time this has happened in seven years.

Miech said NIDA's latest study focuses on more recent responses from a slightly older group of teens.

A new report from the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) in the United States has said that teenagers in the country are less and less likely to consume cigarettes, while vaping and use of marijuana stay at higher levels.

The results released Thursday also show that the use of cocaine, heroin and other illicit drugs continues to decline overall, to the lowest levels seen in the 43 years of the survey.
