Two Reuters journalists apprehended in Myanmar

6,700 Rohingya died in the first month of the exodus according to Doctors Without Borders

Two reporters, including a correspondent from the Yangon bureau of the Reuters news service, were arrested on the northern outskirts of the commercial capital last night and will face charges under Myanmar's colonial-era Official Secrets Act, Frontier has learned.

The global news agency said "we are urgently seeking more information about the circumstances of their arrest and their current situation".

More than half a million Rohingya have fled northwestern Myanmar into Bangladesh since a concerted military crackdown began in late August, following militant attacks on a border post.

The United Nations has branded the military's campaign "a textbook example of ethnic cleansing" of the minority Rohingya.

The British embassy in Yangon expressed deep concern about the arrests, and said in a statement that journalists "must be allowed to work freely and without intimidation".

Zaw Htay, a Myanmar government spokesman, did not respond to a request for comment on the MSF report.

Reuters President and Editor-in-Chief Stephen J. Adler said in a statement on Wednesday: "We are outraged by this blatant attack on press freedom".

Wa Lone has worked for Reuters since previous year and has covered a range of stories, including the Rohingya crisis in Rakhine state, according to the news agency. "We call for authorities to release them immediately".

Myanmar's military says it is fighting Rohingya militants and denies targeting civilians. "We have filed a missing person's report and are doing everything we can to locate them".

MEPs also adopt a motion condemning the "killing, harassment and rape" of Rohingya Muslims by the security forces in Myanmar.

It also calls for "consideration" of whether the European Parliament can revoke the award of its Sakharov human rights prize, which it gave to Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi in 1990. It said most of the 400 were "extremist terrorists" who died during military "clearance operations".

In a speech in September, Suu Kyi said she is aware of the "world's attention" focused on Myanmar, but said her government "does not fear worldwide scrutiny". "We can arrange for you to visit these areas and to ask (those who have stayed) why they have not fled, why they have chosen to remain in their villages".

It said journalists should be given access to Rakhine State so that they can report accurately on developments there.

Last month Suu Kyi was stripped of Oxford's - the city where she received her degree - highest honor, the Freedom of the City of Oxford, an honor bestowed on her in 1997.

MSF says this is equivalent to the death of 2.26% of the sampled population.

Turkey has imprisoned the highest number of reporters at 73.

Two foreign journalists along with two of their Myanmar associates are now awaiting trial on new charges after already being sentenced to jail for illegally flying a drone over parliament.
