'We saved your kebab': MEPs vote against ban on doner meat additive

Labour socialist MEPs felt phosphates posed a health risk

European Union lawmakers are deliberating the composition of kebab meat as they tackle the bloc's latest dispute over food safety.

Proponents counter that phosphates would keep kebab meat juicier for longer.

Needing an absolute majority of at least 376 votes for a ban on phosphates, the chamber was three short, voting 373 to 272, with 30 abstentions. It added there was no health risk.

The centre-right EPP group of MEPs, which supported granting permission for phosphate use, said there was "no proof that phosphates have negative health effects".

IMac Pro 2017 Pre-Orders To Open On Dec. 14
In the run of this freshly launched full display smartphone, iMac Pro will rarely get that much attention from Apple fans. Apple has also tweaked the design with large vents to manage the thermal situation created by this powerful hardware.

The disparity has some vendors alleging that "doner discrimination" was cooked up deliberately to disadvantage Turkish-owned businesses.

Today, many Europeans were relieved to learn that the European Parliament decided not to ban the continent's popular street food known as the doner kebab. 'Such a ban would be the biggest pile of garbage imaginable'.

The center-right European People's Party, the largest group in parliament, said blocking the use of phosphates could lead to 200,000 job losses across Europe, more than half of them in Germany. "This is sad day for consumer rights, which have been trampled on", said Greens EU legislator Bart Staes.

According to the European Parliament, if the European Commission's proposal would not pass, "this would mean a regulatory status quo, where the use of phosphate additives would continue to be unauthorised in kebab meat". "Like for any other additive allowed on the EU single market, if a health concern were to arise, for example, due to the outcome of the study being undertaken by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the authorisation would have to be reconsidered, as stated in legislation", concludes the Parliament's note.
