Yemen rebels 'bury Saleh in closed funeral'

White House urges Saudis, Yemeni rebels to 'immediately cease hostilities'

"Nearly 20 fighters were killed and some others wounded in the targeted site", the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The Trump administration's increased engagement on the Yemen civil war comes after humanitarian groups criticized the administration for ignoring the increasingly dire situation there.

Yemen has been grappling with a humanitarian disaster since Saudi Arabia led a military aggression against the country in March 2015.

The killing of Yemen's former strongman, days after his overtures to the Saudi-led coalition, has buried hopes for a breakthrough in the war, analysts say, and risks fuelling a standoff between Riyadh and Tehran.

"We wanted to be very clear with Saudi officials that the political environment here could constrain us if steps aren't taken to ease humanitarian conditions in Yemen", the official said. That includes USA refueling of coalition jets and the provision of limited US intelligence support. "A lot of humanitarian aid is already going in".

USA policy continues to be that the war can only end with political negotiations, Sanders added.

Rouhani added Iran wants Saudi Arabia to "cut misguided friendship with Zionism" and "stop inhuman bombardment of Yemen".

Saudi Arabia does not recognize Israel, but the two countries have a shared interest in countering Iran.

The war also entered an uncertain new phase this week when Houthis killed their one-time ally, former Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh. More than 8,750 people have been killed since Saudi Arabia and its allies joined the government's fight against the Huthis in 2015, triggering what the United Nations has called the world's worst humanitarian crisis. The Huthis have in recent days consolidated control of the capital and key institutions. "The Iranian-backed Houthi militias must allow food, medicine and fuel to be distributed throughout the areas they control, rather than diverted to sustain their military campaign against the Yemeni people".
