YouTube to counter extremist content with 10000 staff

YouTube Will Add More Human Moderators To Stop Its Child Exploitation Problem

GOOGLE HAS SEARCHED and found its moral compass having chose to pledge 10,000 staff to root out extremist and problematic content on YouTube.

According to the Guardian, YouTube is set to "expand its total workforce to more than 10,000 people responsible for reviewing content that could violate its policies".

Susan Wojcicki, the CEO at YouTube said in a blog post on late Monday that the company will be increasing the number of employees working as supervising the contents up to more than 10000 by next year.

YouTube is now training its machine-learning technology to tackle other areas including child safety and hate speech.

Wojcicki said the company will apply lessons learned from combating violent and extremist videos to other "problematic" videos. It's already been using the technology to help remove violent extremist videos.

She said advances in machine learning meant Youtube could take down almost 70 per cent of violent extremist content within eight hours of it being uploaded and almost half of it within two hours. The company made a decision to take this step amid criticism over its inability to block violent, extremist, and disturbing videos and comments.

Ms Wojcicki moved to reassure video-makers that they won't be adversely affected by any changes, saying: "We've heard loud and clear from creators that we have to be more accurate when it comes to reviewing content, so we don't demonetise videos by mistake". The Guardian found that survivors and the relatives of victims of numerous shootings have been subject to a wide range of online abuse and threats, some tied to popular conspiracy theory ideas featured prominently on YouTube.

NEW YORK (AP) - YouTube is hiring more people to help curb videos that violate its policies. "Since June, our trust and safety teams have manually reviewed almost 2 million videos for violent extremist content, helping train our machine-learning technology to identify similar videos in the future", wrote Susan Wojcicki.

As for speed of removal, incoming technology will allow YouTube to take down almost 70% of violent extremist content within eight hours of upload and almost half of it in two hours. In a blog post, YouTube stated that monetization rules would also be revised to identify videos and channels that are not in line with the parameters set for advertising.
