1 cigarette is all it takes to get you addicted to smoking

Two in three kids get hooked on smoking from their first cigarette, shocking study reveals

It was shown that 60.3 percent of respondents had ever tried a cigarette, with an estimated 68.9 percent of these progressing to daily smoking. The studies include three studies from the United Kingdom, three from the US, one from Australia and one from New Zealand.

The smoking habits of more than 215,000 people were analysed by teams at Queen Mary, University of London, using global databases, including in the UK.

Research found that 69% of people who had ever tried a cigarette had gone on to become a daily smoker, even if just temporarily. According to the researchers, one smoking experience is enough to leave a "remarkable hold" on the first timer.

"We've found that the conversion rate from first-time smoker to daily smoker is surprisingly high, which helps confirm the importance of preventing cigarette experimentation in the first place", Hajek said.

"The UK is seeing a dramatic reduction in smoking at the moment and this tallies with recent findings that only 19 per cent of 11-15 year olds have ever tried a cigarette, so the good news is that we are on the right track", Hajek added.

If you have a circle of friends and anyone around you who are daily smokers, then you might have thought to give it a try once for sure.

In 2016, 15.5% of adults from the United Kingdom smoked - about 7.6 million people - according to the Office for National Statistics, down from 19.9% in 2010.

In the year 2010, smoker's percentage in the United Kingdom was 19.

At this public health minister Steve Brine says,"Britain is a world leader in tobacco control, and thanks to our tough action smoking rates in England are at an all-time low".

The different surveys used different methodologies and yielded different results, so the estimated 68.9 per cent "conversion rate" from experimentation to daily smoking has a margin of error (between 60.9 and 76.9 per cent). But while on one side public and retailers are supporting the introduction of licensing for tobacco, on the other side the government refusing to introduce this.

It is like getting influencing from those who had made cigarette smoking a habit for them. To everyone's surprise, the company is running full-page advertisements in several United Kingdom newspapers, stating that it aims to stop selling cigarettes in Britain sometime in the future, notes CBSNews. The company is also planning to lend support to the anti-smoking efforts of local United Kingdom governments in areas where smoking rates have spiked up.
