Armed robbers steal jewellery 'worth millions' from Ritz hotel in Paris

Armed robbers 'raid five star Paris hotel in £4.2m jewellery heist'

The five men smashed windows at the famous Ritz-Carlton hotel to steal the goods with two suspects now being hunted by cops after they fled on scooters.

He said that three robbers were arrested and the other two got away.

As the robbers opened fire on the hotel, guests at the Hemingway bar were told to "get down", eyewitnesses have said.

A witness told Sky News they heard "at least 10 rounds of gunfire".

She added: "One man wearing a ski mask ran from the bar door to the front of the bar right past my father".

French TV station BFM reported some €4.7 million ($5.64 million) worth of jewels and other merchandise had been stolen.

"Immediately the bartender closed and locked the door and corralled everyone to the back kitchen area of the bar".

He is believed to have hidden in the basement.

Three of the armed robbers were arrested at the hotel during the drama at around 6.30pm local time, RTL reports.

The area of the city is considered well-secured, with police routinely patrolling the Place Vendome, which is home to the Justice Ministry and luxury stores in addition to the Ritz.

French police said the stolen goods, thought to be jewels, amount to "an important sum".

The Ritz has played host to scores of famous people since it opened in 1898.

The hotel, owned by Mohamed Al Fayed, reopened last year after four years of refurbishment work.

A woman leaving the Ritz after the robbery described drinking a cocktail in the hotel's Hemingway Bar when "total panic" broke out.

Princess Diana famously dined at the hotel with Dodi al Fayed before they both died in a tragic vehicle accident in the Pont de l'Alma underpass.
