Australian Open: Hsieh Su-wei stuns Garbiñe Muguruza with flawless display

Garbine Muguruza of Spain in action at the Australian Open

British hope Johanna Konta's love affair with the Australian Open came to an abrupt end Thursday when she was bundled out in the second round by American "lucky loser" Bernarda Pera.

Su-Wei Hsieh, ranked #90 in the world, has scored the biggest win of her career after defeating World #3 Garbine Muguruza 7-6 (1), 6-4. Her aggressive play was reflective on the statistic board, hitting 25 winners and just 23 errors throughout the lengthy two-hour contest, "I gonna try to don't let her destroy me on the court".

"I did my job in two sets against someone that's been troubling in the past for me", Sharapova said. "I think mentally for sure they are much better than us, so when we go on the court we forget who is them, and focus on our game".

Sharapova now faces a third-round clash against 2016 victor Angelique Kerber, who has made an unbeaten start to the season.

Meanwhile former World No. 1 Angelique Kerber celebrated her 30th birthday here with an emphatic 6-4, 6-1 win over Donna Vekic to set up an intriguing third round clash of former champions with Maria Sharapova.

Muguruza had little to celebrate in a 7-6 (1), 6-4 loss to No. 88-ranked Hsieh, who has been No. 1 in doubles but had only previously beaten one top-10 player in singles.

The Spaniard responded by winning four of the next five games, but crumbled in the tie-break as Hsieh took it 7-1.

A quarter-finalist in Melbourne a year ago, the second-round defeat was Muguruza's earliest at the season's opening grand slam since she was beaten at the same stage in 2013.

The Wimbledon champion broke back then staved off a match point following an inside-out forehand where she zapped a forehand swing volley right into Hsieh's body as she earned a hard-fought hold for 4-5.

Sharapova, who missed last year's Australian Open while serving a 15-month ban for a failed doping test, was happy to beat the player who'd ended her run at the U.S. Open last year.

"We played a lot of matches which I remember were really close and tough", Kerber said. "I'm glad I didn't spend too long out on the heat".

Chan Hao-ching (詹皓晴) of Taiwan and Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia, the 14th seeds, won their first round encounter against Laura Robson of Great Britain and Coco Vandeweghe of the United States 7-6 (3), 6-4.

The 26-year-old Romanian world number one, seeking her first Grand Slam title, turned her ankle in her first-round win over Destanee Aiava. I hit the ball very well.

No. 8 Caroline Garcia was the other lone Top 10 victor Thursday, outlasting Czech Marketa Vondrousova 6-7 (3), 6-2, 8-6.
