Bolivia Slams US 'Clumsiness' at UNSC Meeting On Iran Protests

Russia: US exploiting Iran protest to sink nuclear deal

The Iranian people know the truth. "As the Iranian people suffer, their government and the IRGC fund foreign militants, terrorist networks, and human rights abuses".

"The Iranian people are calling out, 'Think of us!"' Haley said, echoing a chant heard at some protests.

Russian Federation challenged right at the outset the jurisdiction of the UNSC over a situation that it called a strictly domestic affair of Iran that would be best left for the Iranian authorities to deal with. "The Iranian regime is now on notice: The world will be watching what you do".

"This is nothing but another desperate attempt by the U.S. administration to escape, as it has lost every shred of moral, political and legal authority and credibility in the eyes of the whole world", he said.

Russia, a close ally of Iran's, agreed. He pointed out that Trump has a history of making "belligerent" comments about Iran.

Furthermore, U.S. -allied France and the United Kingdom defended the the Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran's nuclear program, and noted Iran's compliance.

"It is right and proper - indeed, our assess whether a situation like this could become a threat to worldwide peace and security", British Ambassador Matthew Rycroft said before the meeting.

Still, the United Nations charter empowers the council to "investigate any dispute, or any situation which might lead to global friction", and the US wasn't alone in thinking the Iranian protests qualified.

"Following the current logic, it should have held a meeting after the events in Ferguson, Missouri. The real reason to convene the meeting is a veiled attempt to use the current moment to undermine the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action", he said.

The widespread demonstrations were initially triggered by the worsening economic situation in the country but soon touched upon other issues relevant to the level of democracy and respect for human rights in the country.

And Iranian Ambassador Gholamali Khoshroo - whose country isn't a Security Council member but was invited to participate Friday - said the protests had gotten "direct encouragement by foreign forces including by the president of the United States".

Joining Iran, Russia and China, the French Representative to the UN, Francois Delattre it is up to the Iranians alone to pursue the path of peace.

"However worrying the events of the last few days in Iran may be, they do not constitute per se a threat to global peace and security", Ambassador Francois Delattre said. He refused this past fall to certify Iran's compliance with the pact and said the benefits to Iran were disproportionate to the concessions it made.
