CES: Power cut at major Las Vegas electronics show

LAS VEGAS — Big chunks of CES are currently in the dark as power to parts of the Las Vegas Convention Center went out Wednesday morning

Self-driving cars, 8k televisions and robots offering everything from food service to home security will be debuted at the show, which is now in its 51st year.

But the tech with perhaps the most potential and anticipation will not even launch here for a year or more, 5G wireless internet.

The annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas experienced one of the least expected occurrences in the tech convention's history-a power outage. At around 11.15am local time there was a power surge noticed in the North Hall of the LVCC and at the same time power went out in the main Central Hall.

Attendees of a major technology show were dealing with a basic technological failure as the power went off at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES).

Conference organizers said on Twitter that it was an "isolated power outage" they were working to resolve.

Obviously, it was a nightmare scenario for exhibitors, especially in the Central Hall where most of the biggest names in TVs and other top tech companies congregate to display their wares.

Swift, from the perspective of someone what was in the Central Hall during the outage, might be a bit of an overstatement. Despite this, many have noted that power outage and the weather were not the only problems of CES 2018.

CES sprawls across many venues close to the Las Vegas Strip, and the CTA had highlighted that a lot of them had been unaffected.

The blackout lasted for about 2 hours and the cause still remains a mystery. Some meeting rooms in the South Hall also lost power, but it was restored within minutes.

(12:45PM PT) NV Energy is on the case. "If our extension cord went over there we'd be out of power". It took about two hours before power was restored.

In a statement, CES organiser, the Consumer Technology Association, blamed the outage on recent heavy rainfall which caused condensation on the venue's roof to short circuit one of the facility's transformers.
