Democracy activist in HK gets another jail term

Joshua Wong centre arriving at the High Court in Hong Kong today

He was jailed in August for six months for unlawful assembly for sparking the protests.

A Hong Kong court has jailed activist Joshua Wong for three months, his second prison sentence related to the 2014 pro-democracy protests.

Raphael Wong also received a four-month jail sentence, while Shum received a one-month suspended sentence and a fine.

Chan denied both bail but defence lawyers pushed for him to reconsider his decision and were granted a further hearing yesterday afternoon.

Ahead of the hearing, Joshua Wong - who became the teenage face of the Umbrella Movement - said he had "no regrets" about his involvement.

Joshua Wong, the youngest and best known leader of the so-called "Umbrella Revolution", would be going back to prison for failing to clear an area in Hong Kong's Mong Kok district that had been taken over by protesters in November 2014, Efe news reported.

"He played a leading role on that day", the judge said.

Raphael Wong deserved heavier sentence because he had incited people to disobey the injunction, and because he chose not to plead guilty, Chan said.

Senior counsel Lawrence Lok Ying-kam, who represented Joshua Wong, said outside the court that he was somewhat disappointed with the sentencing of his client, adding that the judge could have given lighter punishment.

Traffic had been disrupted for weeks by the pro-democracy Umbrella Movement.

Last year, three protesters including a University of Hong Kong student were jailed for three years for rioting, the first convictions on this charge since hundreds broke into a fight at a drug addiction treatment centre in 2000.

Hong Kong's 20 years under Chinese rule - A failed project?

Wong's party Demosisto wants self-determination for the city.

He had initially been sentenced to community service but the Hong Kong government appealed against that, arguing it was too lenient.

Hong Kong has been granted a high degree of autonomy under the "one country, two systems" principle. This allows freedom of speech and a partially directly elected parliament, as well as an independent judiciary, but there are concerns those liberties are being eroded.

The government's move was seen as further evidence of Beijing's growing influence over Hong Kong.
