Facebook plans major changes to news feed

Facebook Hosts Conference On Future Of Social Technologies

Facebook's revamping of its news feed is meant to ensure more "meaningful interaction" on the social network, Zuckerberg said in his post.

Because space in News Feed is limited, showing more posts from friends and family and updates that spark conversation means we'll show less public content, including videos and other posts from publishers or businesses.

If public content is to be promoted, it will now have to be seen to encourage community interaction - as happens within the tight-knit groups that discuss TV programmes and sports, he said. Also, long haul, it should safeguard Facebook's business and guarantee despite everything it has a stage to give referral activity to news distributers and advertisers, yet not exactly some time recently.

Until this point, Facebook has been increasingly emphasizing video content in its News Feed.

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. In addition, page posts that generate conversation between people will show higher in news feeds, with video expected to be the winning format here.

Facebook is making a major change to its product to make sure that people feel like their time on the social network is "well spent", the company announced Thursday evening. Last year, the social media giant also tested products to connect its users to local news.

The company says this is all part of Facebook's Journalism Project initiative, which Facebook launched shortly after last year's USA presidential election in which so-called fake news spread on the service, leading many to point to Facebook as part of the reason for Donald Trump's surprising victory.

Facebook and other researchers have particularly homed in on passive content.

He added that Facebook had begun making changes in this direction previous year.

The comments come after widespread media speculation about the impact of social media on how consumers perceive issues and society, and the potentially harmful effects of bogus news and extremist content in news feeds. VP of News Feed Adam Mosseri tells TechCrunch "I expect that the measure of dispersion for distributers will go down in light of the fact that a great deal of distributer content is simply latently devoured and not discussed". For example, live videos often lead to discussion among viewers on the platform, according to Facebook. Pushing to make Facebook a purpose-built tool for local communities (think utility-driven additions like Marketplace) is certainly a less dystopian vision of the platform's future, at least compared to staying the course.
