Fiat Chrysler Will Invest Over $1 Billion Into Michigan Manufacturing Facility

President Donald Trump speaks during a prison reform roundtable in the Roosevelt Room of the Washington Thursday Jan. 11 2018

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V., a United Kingdom based automotive manufacturer, has chose to spend Dollars 1 billion to shift its heavy-duty truck production facility from Mexico to MI.

It is proper that the company's employees are able to share in the tax reform savings and that we acknowledge openly and the improvement in the business environment in the U.S.by investing accordingly in our industrial footprint, said the automaker's CEO Sergio Marchionne through a press release. Separately, the Euro-American automaker announced plans to pay $2,000 bonuses to 60,000 US hourly and salaried employees this coming spring.

The economic "nightmare" predicted by left-wing lawmakers such as Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer continued this week, with more and more major American corporations announcing increased wages and big bonuses following the GOP-led tax cuts. FCA said it would add 2500 jobs as a result.

The roughly $120 million payout to employees will be in addition to profit-sharing checks that United Auto Workers members receive as part of their contracts.

The all-new 2019 Ram 1500 will make its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next Monday. It also produces metallurgical products and production systems for the automobile industry, and owns publishing and insurance companies.

FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne says the company should adjust its manufacturing footprint to reflect "improvement in the USA business environment". The Saltillo plant will eventually be retooled to build a future commercial vehicle - perhaps something van-shaped. Since 2011, the Company has invested more than $5.7 billion in its USA facilities and hired almost 15,000 hourly employees by keeping labor costs competitive.

The move is expected to create more than 2,500 jobs in the Detroit area by 2020.

“Its all taking off here in Macomb County, ” Hackel said.

Brian Rothenberg, a spokesman for the UAW, offered cautious praise, explaining that the union had just been made aware of the announcement. More than 700 new jobs will be added to support production, the company noted.

Threats by Donald Trump to withdraw the US from the North American Free Trade Agreement or dramatically rework the deal have spurred warnings from the auto industry of major harm. The passage of US tax reform legislation late a year ago has also prompted the action. On Wednesday, Toyota and Mazda announced they would build a $1.6-billion, 4,000-worker plant in Alabama.
