Firefighters battle giant blaze at Dublin metal plant

Dublin Fire Brigade battling blaze at recycling plant near Dublin Airport

Firefighters are tackling a major blaze at a recycling plant near Dublin Airport.

Eight units are dealing with the blaze off the Ballymun Road in St Margaret's.

Eight units of Dublin Fire Brigade are attending the scene as huge plumes of smoke can be seen coming from a garage surrounded by cars in the scrappage yard. Drones were also used to help the firefighters analyze the situation and decide where to direct their resources.

Dublin Airport said the smoke was not having an impact on airport operations.

Another image showed a huge fire in a compound with many scrapped cars stacked on top of each other.

He said there are now small pockets of fire at the scene and it will take some time for it to be totally extinguished.

The fire brigade had to source an increased water supply from the county council to tackle the inferno.

Residents are being urged to keep windows and doors closed.

"Avoid the area, especially those with any breathing issues".

Some passengers at Dublin airport earlier posted pictures of the smoke, with several expressing concern it would impact on their flights.

The fire spread to vehicles outside the shed and fire officers said they had to adopt a "defensive stance" because of the danger of explosion from fuel tanks and oxyacetylene cutting equipment.
