Disruptions in train and flight operations, however, continued. The Air Quality Index - a measure of pollutant in the air - was recorded at 362 on a scale of 500 for the past 24 hours.

At least 14 trains were cancelled, over 60 delayed and 18 trains has been rescheduled due to the thick fog in several parts of the northern India. The delays for a few trains went up to over 12 hours. It improved significantly as the day progressed, a meteorological department official said.

Another 11 flights, both flying into and out of the IGIA, were cancelled due to low visibility, they said.

Earlier on Monday operations at the IGI airport had been temporarily suspended in the wake of dense fog canopying the whole national capital region and the visibility dropping below 50 metres. The meteorological department has forecast moderate fog for Thursday morning.

The Met department has predicted similar weather conditions for the weekend.

The maximum temperature was recorded at 20.3 degrees Celsius, a notch above the normal, it said. The maximum temperature was likely to hover around 19 degrees Celsius.
