Hannity & Gingrich Fire Back at Obama Over His Comments About Fox News

Former President Obama and former Late Show host David Letterman

Let's get that out of the way. "I held it together in front of Malia and then we drove away", he revealed. A gifted broadcaster and hallowed comedian, Letterman's series promised to be a rich meal where, often, the late-night sphere from which he departed in 2015 can feel like a series of ephemeral snacks.

Former President Barack Obama spoke with David Letterman about how fragmented the media is these days, and he invoked Fox News to make his point. "There you go", he says.

The guest is Barack Obama, and both the interviewer and the interviewee struggle mightily not to mention President Trump. In each hour-long episode, Letterman conducts a long-form conversation with a single guest, and explores topics of his own outside the studio.

The no-Trump-talk edict pretty clearly came from Obama's camp, as he's kept his remarks about Trump's horrendous first year in an arguably too-reserved, tight-lipped lock.

"We are operating in completely different information universes [now]". We see Letterman walking the Edmund Pettus bridge in Alabama with Congressman John Lewis and reflecting on the Bloody Monday conflict which it was the site of. Obama and his election are positioned as a direct extension of that struggle, and it's impossible not to view the president's own statements about disrupting the status quo-made at Selma on the 50th anniversary of the march and highlighted in the interview-in the context of the current administration.

Get ready for another side of David Letterman.

In a rare extended interview, Obama tells David Letterman that social media and the increasing personalization of many Americans' information streams has led to the reinforcing of biases. As a longtime late-night fan, Wilstein is happy to have Letterman back and enjoyed the obvious camaraderie between two powerful men in their post-career phase - or, as Letterman puts it, who both "recently left long-term jobs".

After Barack Obama appeared as the first guest on David Letterman's new Netflix show, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, several of the amusing stories shared between the two are making their own headlines. It was a long-evolving process and you could say it was sped up either by his heart surgery or the 9/11 terrorist attacks, but those are easy markers. Letterman offered some emotional words at the end of the hourlong interview, telling Obama, "Irrespective of the man or woman who holds the office, you have to respect the office of president".

Obama was Letterman's first guest for his limited run Netflix series, which debuts Friday. That's not unlike the situation (multiplied a million-fold) when Letterman competed with Jay Leno and Leno beat him in the ratings from 1995 to 2009, and then 2010 to 2014 (with Conan O'Brien taking up a few months on "The Tonight Show in-between Leno's two stints)". That's not really the point, it appears. No band, no backdrop, not even a table, just a stage, two chairs, an audience, Dave, and his guest. That's it. Nothing revolutionary here. The result is a more reflective, if a little blander, host. Six episodes are planned that will be rolled out monthly.
