Here's what Facebook News Feed overhaul could mean to users, business

Facebook is about to make a huge change to your news feed

This means users will start to see more posts from friends rather than publishers.

Facebook has said it will change the news feed algorithm to prioritize meaningful content, increasing content from family and friends and content that creates discussion.

Facebook announced a major update that will put friends and family above pages or celebrities in a user's news feed.

Mark said that the changes would maximize the content that users would want to consume on his social media.

"We can feel more connected and less lonely, and that correlates with long term measures of happiness and health", he wrote. Zuckerberg believes passively watching videos may not be as good even if they are informative or entertaining.

However, if a post by a brand page is getting less organic reach due to this ranking change, "it may see a slight impact within the ads auction, if boosted", an email to an agency read.

Now it's his personal goal for 2018 to fix the site and weed out hate, abuse, meddling by malicious nation states, while also making it more "meaningful" and less depressing for users.

In a Facebook post on Thursday night, Zuckerberg said that public content from brands had inundated news feeds, overtaking posts from personal connections. The move could be in the detriment of various businesses and news organizations that rely on the social network to increase the visibility of their content, but it should improve users' experience overall.

ISBA, a lobby group for British advertisers, cautiously welcomed the move if it results in the public "feeling less bombarded by poor quality advertising".

Shares of Facebook fell more than 4 per cent on Friday and were on track for their worst session in more than three months after Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg announced changes that he said would hit user engagement in the near term.

The company plans to change that, according to the social media mogul, citing research findings that using Facebook to connect with friends and family leads to improvement in a person's well-being.

There's no doubt Zuckerberg can make such changes-he's a gifted CEO, beloved by his employees, who has total control over the company he started in a dorm room in 2004.

Facebook, which owns four of the world's most popular smartphone apps including Instagram, has for years prioritized material that its complex computer algorithms think people will engage with through comments, "likes" or other ways of showing interest.

There are many tight-knit communities around TV shows and sports teams. The changes could jeopardize that route to their audiences, though some speculate it could be a ploy to force these companies to buy more Facebook ads. "Good on Facebook - they are doing the right thing, long-term".

The US election in 2016 saw a string of adverts making misleading or factually inaccurate statements about political candidates gain traction on the site. "Without that - as the large majority of all new online advertising spend continues to go to the search and social media platforms - quality content will no longer be a choice or an option".
