House votes to renew FISA surveillance program, following mixed messages from Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump greets Prime Minister Erna Solberg of Norway upon his arrival at the West Wing of the White House

The legislation passed 256-164, despite opposition from both sides.

It came less than 24 hours after the U.S. president's own press secretary issued a statement detailing how the administration opposed a change to FISA and called for its reauthorization.

Trump's flip flopping on FISA echoes yesterday's attempt to frame the President as a competent policy guy who can run the country.

He first implied his displeasure with the bill by saying FISA might have been used to "surveil and abuse" his election campaign team.

During the segment, after claiming that Trump's "woes began" with "surveillance of him", Andrew Napolitano literally turns to the camera and says, "Mr. President, this is not the way to go". Mark R. Warner (D-Va.), ranking member on the Senate Intelligence Committee, tweeted after Trump's post.

In the end, the dustup over Donald Trump's contradictory tweets did little to derail reauthorization of the PATRIOT Act's most controversial section.

The mixed messages prompted House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to urge Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) to pull the bill. GOP Majority Leader Mitch McConnell ensured everyone that the measure would pass next week without amendments. She suggested reporters were the only ones left confused, prompting Trump to issue a second tweet almost two hours later. Trump wrote on Twitter.

A proposal to impose significant new privacy limits on the National Security Agency's warrantless surveillance program failed in a House vote Thursday, despite a yearslong effort by a bipartisan group of lawmakers to bolster civil liberties protections.

Trump, and Nunes, accused the Obama administration of improperly revealing the identities of members of the president's transition team.

Trump, though, has focused intently on the dossier in recent days, especially after a transcript was released of the congressional interview with the co-founder of the firm behind the document.

Nothing about Section 702 poses a genuine privacy threat to Americans.

We're describing the House debate on the reauthorization of Section 702 of the FISA Amendments Act, a law that allows the USA government to monitor foreigners talking to foreigners on foreign soil. The House bill before Congress would extend section 702 to 2021. Opponents of the act argue it allows the U.S.to retain data on American citizens who communicate with foreign nationals overseas.

Trump's administration has pushed for the FISA programme to be reauthorised, with FBI Director Christopher Wray calling it a valuable tool to fight terrorism.

After watching Fox and Friends this morning the President tweeted this at 7:33 AM ...
