How to protect Windows and Apple PCs from critical processor flaw

Microsoft is working with the antivirus industry to solve the problem. The technology's sector's love of grand sounding names has led to the flaws being dubbed the "Meltdown and Spectre bugs".

For now, there aren't any confirmed attacks on Microsoft customers exploiting the vulnerabilities.

Numerous operating systems require updates as well, including Apple Mac OS X and iOS devices, Google's Android, and Microsoft Windows.

A lengthy thread on answers.microsoft.com records numerous instances in which Security Update for Windows KB4056892, Redmond's Meltdown/Spectre patch, leaves some AMD-powered PCs with the Windows startup logo and not much more. The Windows 10 flavor of the patch (KB4056892) is also causing bootup problems for some users with AMD-based systems. Some are able to restore systems using a previous restore point. Some say that even re-installing Windows 10 doesn't help matters. "After 3 rollbacks, found this tread so I don't feel totally stupid for having wasted most of my Sunday trying to "fix" this now known to be un-fixable problem".

Unfortunately, many users reported that the latest Windows 10 updates often caused more harm than good. Between software patches and the differences in AMD's microarchitectures compared to its rivals, the company's chips are largely immune to the so-called "speculative execution" vulnerabilities, AMD claimed.

"Security updates to Windows SMB Server, the Windows Subsystem for Linux, Windows Kernel, Windows Datacenter Networking, Windows Graphics, Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, and the Microsoft Scripting Engine".

In order for the bug to patched completely Microsoft and other tech companies are waiting on firmware updates from the Intel, AMD and ARM, which are in the process of being rolled out to users.

If you installed earlier updates, only the new fixes contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device. In a statement, Intel said: "Intel and other technology companies have been made aware of new security research describing software analysis methods that, when used for malicious purposes, have the potential to improperly gather sensitive data from computing devices that are operating as designed".
