In first mission of 2018, space agency launches 100th satellite

Nellore: The countdown for the launch of the PSLV on Friday, which will place the Cartosat-2 and 30 smaller satellites in space, has begun at 5.38 am on Thursday at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Shar, Srihari-kota in Nellore district.

Scientists would bring down the height by twice restarting the fourth stage of the PSLV-C40 for launch of Microsat satellite, which will be placed in a 359 kms polar SSO, ISRO said.

The 28 global customer satellites are being launched as part of the commercial arrangements between ISRO and its commercial arm "Antrix Corporation Ltd".

The co-passenger satellites comprise of one Microsatellite and one Nanosatellite from India as well as 3 Microsatellites and 25 Nanosatellites from six countries, namely, Canada, Finland, France, Republic of Korea, UK, and the USA.

The total weight of all the 31 satellites carried on-board the PSLV-C40 is about 1323 kg.

The entire launch of satellites is expected to happen over a period of 2 hours and 21 seconds, it said.

The doomed August 31 mission placed India's IRNSS 1H navigation satellite into orbit, but the PSLV's payload fairing - the shroud created to protect the spacecraft during the first few minutes of flight - failed to jettison soon after liftoff.

The 144-foot-tall (44-meter) PSLV set for launch Friday will deliver India's Cartosat 2F mapping satellite to orbit, along with 30 secondary payloads for Indian, U.S., South Korean, British, French, Canadian, and Finnish customers.

Among the 28 worldwide co-passenger satellites, 19 belong to the United States, five from South Korea and one each from Canada, France, UK and Finland. The Cartosat-2 series satellite launch is a follow-on mission with the primary objective of providing high resolution scene specific spot imageries.

In February 2017, PSLV-C37 launched the first Cartosat-2 series satellite along with 103 co-passenger satellites in a single flight.
