IS claims deadly blasts at Afghan cultural centre

At least 40 people died and over 30 were injured in a suicide bomb attack in Kabul on Thursday.

The attack, the latest in a series to hit Afghan media groups in recent years, follows an attack on a private television station in Kabul last month.

Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish says an unknown number of suicide attackers set off an explosion outside the center before storming it.

People running outside into the compound following an initial blast inside were caught by two further explosions which caused heavy casualties, witnesses said.

The local Islamic State affiliate has carried out several attacks targeting Shiites in Afghanistan.

The Islamic State-linked Aamaq news agency said four bombs were used in the attack, one strapped to the suicide attacker.

The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to worldwide peace and security.

It's understood many students are among the victims.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani called the December 28 attack a "crime against humanity" committed by terrorists. The Iran-backed news outlet, Afghan Voice Agancy, reports that one of their journalists was killed and that their headquarters, which are housed in the Tebyan Centre, might have been the target.

Residents said two explosions, possibly hand grenades, were heard.

That attack targeted an office of the National Directorate of Security, Rahimi said, near the US Embassy and other diplomatic missions.

ISIS-K officially established a foothold in Afghanistan less than a month after former U.S. President Barack Obama and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation declared combat operations concluded at the end of December 2014 in the war-ravaged country.

With the increase in attacks against Shiites in Kabul, fear has grown among the residents of the area.

Dozens of people have been killed and almost sixty injured in a suicide bomb attack in the Afghan capital of Kabul.

The attack comes weeks after Ghani said the Islamic State, which emerged in Afghanistan in late 2014, "was on the run" in the country following a recent series of joint offensives with US -led troops.
