Israeli shot dead near settlement in occupied West Bank

Jordan: 50 MPs demand ambassador be recalled from Israel

Some 22 gunshots were found in his auto, Israel's army radio reported.

The settler was driving in his auto when he was shot at from a close range, thought to be from a vehicle passing by.

"The review of the incident is ongoing".

The area frequently sees tensions between hardline Israeli settlers and Palestinians.

Hamas spokesman Fazwi Barhoum said in an emailed press statement that his movement blesses that attack "which was a result of the Zionist occupation (Israel) violations and a respond to its crimes against our people in the West Bank".

Some 400,000 Israelis live in settlements in the West Bank, which is home to 2.2 million Palestinians.

Israel however differentiates between settlements it has approved and those it has not.

Past attempts by Israeli authorities to evacuate Havat Gilad have led to clashes with settlers there.

Hundreds attended Shevah's funeral at Havat Gilad.

The White House said on Monday US Vice President Mike Pence will visit the region from January 20 to 23, embarking on a tour originally planned for December after Trump recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

He again condemned the Palestinians' "martyrs' fund", which makes payments to the families of Palestinian suicide bombers, militants and others killed or wounded in confrontations with Israeli police and soldiers. Here's the principle they're communicating to their people: Kill Israelis and get rich.

The statement by Friedman denounced Hamas for praising a drive-by shooting that killed Israeli Rabbi Raziel Shevach, who was shot Tuesday in a West Bank attack.

Trump's December 6 announcement that he would move the U.S. embassy from Israel's commercial capital to Jerusalem enraged the Palestinians. Most countries consider as illegal the Israeli settlements built in the territory which Israel captured in the 1967 war.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Maliki criticized the U.S. government on Wednesday for "giving the greenlight" to Israel to do "whatever it wants with Palestinian land", in regards to Israeli announcements of plans to build over 1,000 new illegal settlement units in the occupied West Bank. "Look no further to why there is no peace", Friedman said.
