"It might get ugly": Bay Area cities brace for ICE sweeps

Tampa Bay area sheriffs, ICE to make public safety announcement in Pinellas Co.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Sarah Rodriguez said agency policy is to neither confirm nor deny the possibility or existence of a specific operation.

Seventeen Florida law enforcement agencies have agreed to cooperate with the federal government on immigration enforcement, offering what officials say is a template that can be used nationwide to overcome legal obstacles preventing tight working relationships.

"This is simply wrong".

"We're always anxious of what's going to come next from this administration", said Juan Rivera of Carecen SF, a nonprofit that assists Central American immigrants in the San Francisco Bay Area and is part of a rapid response network that alerts immigrants about ICE raids.

Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Santa Clara, said the administration is targeting immigrants to make a political point.

They reacted to an anonymous tip off in a San Francisco Chronicle report and recent promises by Homan and others to conduct raids in response to a new California law strictly limiting the cooperation of local law enforcement with federal immigration authorities.

But he says the goal should be public safety, not deporting otherwise law-abiding immigrants who are in the country illegally.

The source told the Chronicle that ICE agents may look to arrest more than 1,500 undocumented immigrants during the raids.

Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris sent a letter Wednesday to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Acting Director Thomas Homan asking how raids are prioritized. Jerry Brown for signing California's sanctuary state bill on Fox News earlier this month.

California lawmakers didn't take Homan's warning well, with several state legislators writing a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen requesting that she intervene.

Hing said ICE agents will likely go after undocumented immigrants who have missed scheduled deportation hearings, searching their homes and places of employment. The operation would be the largest enforcement action of President Donald Trump's time in office if it does indeed capture more than 1,500 illegal immigrants.

"I want you to ask my victim's family if he should have been here", the sheriff said.

Immigration enforcement has been ongoing in California, with federal authorities carrying out enforcement activities like recently initialed payroll audits of one hundred 7-11 stores that quickly resulted in the arrest of 21 suspected illegal aliens.

The congregation voted not to hide undocumented people, but to house them, hopeful federal agents would not raid a house of worship.
