Johnson and Kirk share lead in Hawaii

Brian Harman capped a seven-under par 63 with an eagle at his final hole Friday to seize a three-shot lead in the second round of the US PGA Tour's Sony Open in Hawaii.

The three-time major champion, who is riding a string of six consecutive top-10 finishes and had been installed as the favorite a week after a ninth place finish at Kapalua, declined to speak with the media following his round. "You never know how it's going to go, even though I've been playing well in practice". This is the second straight tournament for Kirk to have at least a share of the first-round lead. According to, Johnson reached 16 of 18 greens in regulation and had 2.801 stokes gained from approach to green, which was fourth-best in the round.

"Kapalua is more of a feel, judge off the lies, work with what the lie gives you and the wind gives you in order to hit those big greens and put yourself in a position to make birdies".

"My swing kind of felt better and better as the day went on". It takes about five or 10 minutes.

The leading duo was one stroke in front of a group of four players on a crowded leaderboard.

Kirk was three behind along with Zach Johnson (67), John Peterson (64), Tom Hoge (65) and PGA Tour rookie Talor Gooch. Stanley capped his round with an eagle at the par-five ninth, rolling in a 41-footer.

He had to settle for a 69, thanks to a handsome chip over the bunker to inches from the cup on his last hole at the par-5 ninth for a birdie.

He shook off enough rust to birdie three of his last four holes for a 63.

The three-time Major victor even managed to make the quadruple bogey without taking a penalty stroke as he hacked his way up the left-side of the 454-yard par 4 before eventually signing for an eight which left him on level par for the tournament before a bounce-back birdie at the last and an eventful round of one-under, 69.

Spieth has recorded four straight top 10s in Hawaii, including a solo third here previous year.

He rallied somewhat with a birdie at his final hole for a one-under par 69.

Defending champion Justin Thomas, who past year opened with a 59 before going on to set the PGA Tour's all-time scoring record in a 72-hole event of 253, could not conjure up that same magic, instead carding a three-under 67, four strokes behind the leaders.

World number four Thomas had Phil Mickelson's former caddie Jim "Bones" McKay on his bag, filling in for regular caddie Jimmy Johnson, who is sidelined by plantar fasciitis.
