Louisiana teacher handcuffed forcibly after asking questions at board meeting

Teacher Forcibly Removed from Meeting After Questioning Superintendent Raise

A freakish incident at a school board meeting in Louisiana Monday night after a teacher is removed from the meeting in handcuffs.

According to local news station KATC, Deyshia Hargrave, an English language arts teacher at Rene Rost Middle Schools, asked a couple of questions - which board officials answered - during the public-comment only portion of the meeting. Next, she is seen on the hallway floor, screaming as the marshal handcuffs her behind her back.

Deyshia Hargrave, a teacher in the Vermilion Parish School System, asked questions regarding the board's consideration of a $38,000 raise for the superintendent of the school system. "I talked with the attorney for the school board, and they do not wish to pursue any charges against the teacher".

'Sir, I am way smaller than you' she cries as he pushes her out the door of the building.

"You're making our jobs more hard", she said.

She said that it was unfair that he was being given a performance-based raise when it was the teachers and students who were "doing the work" to meet those goals.

Hargrave bonded out of jail, The Associated Press reported.

As indicated by KATC-TV, Hargrave tended to the school board amid people in general remarks segment of the gathering concentrated on educator compensations and increases in salary.

She started to walk sideways through the assembly to leave, as some protested, noting that Mr. Puyau had started to directly address Ms. Hargrave just as the marshal tried to eject her. She wasn't making a fuss, she was pointing out something he didn't want public, they used arrest tactics to remove her when she was already leaving and that's illegal'.

After she was called on a second time, a city marshal stepped in and asked her to leave.

"I personally apologize for the Vermilion Parish School Board", she said, adding, "This is a sad day for Vermilion Parish".

"Excuse me", she said to him.

Also responding was the ACLU of Louisiana which also released a statement on the Vermilion Parish teachers arrest.

Board members told NBC News that the meeting was called to vote on whether to approve a new contract for superintendent Jermone Puyau. The organization says the actions of the officer as 'unacceptable and raise serious constitutional concerns'.

It is unclear whether the marshal acted on board members' orders or his own accord, according to KATC.

Hargrave has yet to comment on her removal.
