Microsoft allegedly pursuing development on new Fable game

Microsoft Reviving the Fable Franchise With Playground Studios

Though Microsoft hasn't confirmed Fable 4 is on the way, there have been signs that the franchise hasn't been abandoned. We may hear more about the title at Microsoft's E3 press conference in June.

They also mention that Microsoft is investing heavily in making a new Fable game a reality, some 200 planned to come help Playground out.

Over on Eurogamer, they're reporting on rumors that Microsoft has a new Fable game in the works.

The Xbox One does not enjoy that many popular exclusives and successfully bringing back the Fable IP would certainly strengthen Microsoft's hand, not just for the Xbox One, but whatever hardware comes next. The decision seemed to signify Microsoft's move away from single-player, story-focused games, but a new report suggests the company has chose to change direction once again with a full-fledged fourth Fable game.

According to the report, the new Fable is being made by Playground, who is now in the midst of staffing up and aims to have around 200 developers to tackle the project.

Back in 2016, Lionhead Studios opted to close down rather than continue Fable Legends as an independent studio.

In an interview Eurogamer, Simon Carter - the co-creator of the Fable series - was not sure how he felt about this news regarding a potential new Fable game release.

He doesn't doubt, however, that the team at Playground is "very talented" and will do a "fantastic job". Microsoft acquired Lionhead and the Fable license in 2006.

As revealed by Eurogamer, UK-based Playground Games is reported to be behind the new title. Whether or not it will attempt to tie into the world events or story of Fable 3 is unknown, but we feel that it is unlikely given the entirely new studio and the timeline projected. However, it looks like former Lionhead developers would have loved to create this game but never got a chance to do so. The outfit's second studio - which said it was working on an open-world RPG game past year - is behind this. It didn't provide a lot of details about the project, only saying that the new title will be an open-world action RPG. However, given the degree of hiring going on we imagine the team is trying to get developers with the necessary expertise.
